This is available for free if you own a handheld device that runs on Palm OS, Pocket PC, Pocket PC 2002/2003, or Windows CE, (Linux OS versions with a web browser may work too)! Please carefully read and follow the directions below to set your handheld device up for our CORN newsletter. If you have a Mobile phone, or pager, we regret to inform you that we do not provide content for these devices just yet.

Using Avant Go on Your Handheld

AvantGo is a popular free service on the web for providing web content on handheld devices. Through AvantGo, users can select from a large number of existing content channels along with the option of setting up their own channels. A channel through AvantGo is nothing more than a specialized web site that is set up to download to your handheld device each time you Sync it to your PC. In order to use AvantGo, you must have an account set up through Avant Go. Click here to set up an account. When finished, refer to the next paragraph.

If you have set up an AvantGo account, or have a preexisting account, now is the time to set up a custom channel for the CORN Newsletter. You must maually set up a channel through your AvantGo account for our CORN Newsletter. In doing so, we have set up a special section on this web site that provides content specifically designed for handheld devices. Follow the directions in AvantGo to link to our site. When asked to set up a channel for CORN, use the following location:

Channel Location: http://corn.osu.edu/pda

Note: This is a simplified version of this weeks CORN Newsletter and related content pages. The title should be 'CORN Newsletter'. It should take no more than 100k of space (usually around 50k). We strongly do not recommend 'following links'; most pages linked to the newsletter are not PDA friendly. On occasion, we will however provided other pages within our special channel site related to the Newsletter that are PDA friendly; thus, set the 'Channel Link Depth' to 1. As for images, we have taken time to make sure they are PDA friendly; thus we recommend selecting 'yes' when asked to include images. There are other services comparable to Advant Go that may work just as well.

Manual Downloads

CORN Newsletter in Explorer

The CORN Newsletter can also be downloaded and be viewed as a web page to your handheld. There are two ways to do this: 1) go to http://corn.osu.edu/pda and then save the web page to a data card or directly to your PDA that is synced to your computer (any web browser will work), or 2) use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater by creating a mobile favorite in the tools menu list located at the top of the browser.

Instructions using Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater.

1) Go to http://corn.osu.edu/pda
2) Go to tools and select "Create Mobile Favorite"
3) It will queue you to save to your mobile favorites folder. You can change the name and have it automatically update the file from the web to your mobile favorites folder for future use so you don't have to download manually each time.
4) Sync handheld computer to computer and sync file.
5) Locate the file on the handheld and execute the file. It should automatically bring the browser up to read the web page. If this does not work, bring up the browser first and then locate the file within the browser.
