Presented by Wayne SWCD in cooperation with The Ohio State University. RSVP preferred by not required – Wayne SWCD (330) 263-5376.
With insights from over 45 years of phosphorous fertilizer research, Dr. Manbir Rakkar, will share current recommendations for phosphorus applications and examples of best management practices to keep nutrients working for us in growing crops rather than against us as a contaminant of surface water.
A trip to the OSU Sediment Capture and Reuse Field on Barnard Road, a quarter mile north of U.S. 250 – Dr. John Witter presenting. Dr. Witter will discuss reusing dredged material from Conservation Ditches on farm fields as a soil amendment to reduce chemical fertilizer use and eliminate dredged material hauling costs. Dr. Witter will also discuss the use of two-stage ditches and self-forming channels as a way to reduce streambank erosion, reconnect the floodplains and use vegetated streambanks for nutrient capture from subsurface tiles.
Wrapping up with a presentation by Dr. Steve Lyon at the OSU Smart Drainage Field also on Barnard Road. Dr. Lyon will share results will share the results of his study on how storing and releasing runoff water with a subsurface tile outlet control structure, or tile stop, can provide valuable nutrients to crop root structures and limit discharge and nutrient loss into waterways.
