    It’s hard to believe we are starting August! This is our 16th week of the Lep (moth) monitoring program and last week of monitoring WBC for many counties. As we transition out of WBC, we will begin monitoring for fall armyworm (FAW). Already, Van Wert County is reporting an average of 1.3 in the 10 traps monitored over last week.  Corn earworm will continue to be monitored for a few more weeks – but numbers across the state have been low this season.     August is the optimal timing for late-summer alfalfa plantings in Ohio. The Ohio Agronomy Guide recommends planting dates between August 1st and August 15th for northern Ohio, and planting dates between August 1st and August 30th for southern Ohio. The differences in these planting timeframes are primarily due to the later timing of first frosts in southern Ohio, since a frost before successful root system establishment will limit your new seeding’s ability to overwinter.
