    Summary

  2. Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is a serious threat to soybean, and early detection is crucial to mitigating its impact on yields. The presence of SCN in a field, and more importantly, the SCN numbers, will determine the most effective management strategy. It is crucial, therefore, to test your fields and know your SCN numbers.

  3. After finishing out our fifth week of monitoring for black cutworm and true armyworm, it was observed that the slight decline seen last week in the statewide average for both pests has continued to drop. Van Wert has seen the highest average of both BCW and AMW pests this past week. These numbers indicate that we have most likely passed the peak abundance of both BCW and AMW moths in Ohio for this season.

  4. Episode 8 of Battle for the Belt is now available: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BupYuRu30BI

In Episode 8, Dr. Maggie Lewis, a research scientist for the Department of Entomology at The Ohio State University, walks us through scouting for bean leaf beetle in soybean.

  5. Slugs are increasingly concerning for Ohio growers, especially in no-till fields where cover crops are grown. Slugs are a nocturnal pest that feed directly on soybeans causing both seed and foliar damage that can result in complete loss of the plant (Figure 1). Because slugs feed at night, growers often don’t notice until the damage has already occurred, and it is too late. To better manage slugs in Ohio, we first need to understand slug pressure across our state.

  6. Join OSU Extension for this year’s small grains field day on June 20 at the Northwest Agricultural Research Station in Wood County. Topics include wheat fertility management, precision planting of wheat, wheat Yield Enhancement Network, and current research on crop insurance for wheat. Paul Martin and Sons and Redline Equipment will have the latest technology for planting wheat.
