2014 Champaign and Union Agronomy Day

For the first time the Champaign and Union County Extension offices will be hosting an Agronomy Day. This is an exciting opportunity to bring many of the agronomic state specialists from OSU to the local community. The day includes the following topics and speakers.

Dr. Laura Lindsey, OSU Soybean and Small Grains Specialist will discuss ways to properly manage wheat. She will also share the results of the first year of a statewide soybean yield study (farms from Champaign and Union included). Everything from pre-plant soil samples to grain samples and in between was analyzed during the growing season to see what factors affect yield the most.

Dr. Mark Loux, OSU Weed Specialist, will talk about attacking some of our tough weeds and keeping Palmer Amaranth out of the picture. Dr. Andy Michel, OSU Entomologist, has been tracking Western Bean Cutworm movement in Ohio as well as Corn Rootworm resistance to Cry3Bb1 in the western Corn Belt.

Harold Watters, OSU Extension Agronomist, has been studying nitrogen rates for corn and will share several years of data on his findings. Dr. Peter Thomison, OSU Corn Specialist will present methods to close the yield gap in corn as well as the results of planting depth research. His graduate student, Alex Lindsey, will talk about his work on drought tolerant corn varieties.

Certified Crop Advisers will receive 0.5 hours of nutrient management, 2 hours for IPM and 4 hours in crop production if attending the entire day. The event will be held February 18, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Union County Services Building, 940 London Ave., Marysville, OH 43040. The cost to attend is $20 per person (including lunch) and registration is due by February 11. For registration information visit go.osu.edu/agevents and click on Agronomy Day or call the Union County office at 937-644-8117.
