July 27 Field Day to Feature Field Crops

Due to indecisive weather, it’s been an interesting year for field crops so far, and this trend will most likely continue throughout the year. That is why the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC) and Ohio State University Extension are hosting a field day for corn and soybean growers on July 27.

OARDC and OSU Extension are the research and outreach arms of Ohio State’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences.

The field day will take place from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Northwest Agricultural Research Station, 4240 Range Line Road, in Custar. The station focuses on row crop research and the challenges facing growers in northwest Ohio.

Participants at the field day will get a wagon tour of the station and hear presentations by CFAES experts.

“Production agriculture is a challenging industry in both good and bad years,” said Matt Davis, farm manager at OARDC’s Northwest Agricultural Research Station. “We have assembled experts in a wide array of areas to discuss topics under research to help growers better manage these issues.”

CFAES specialists Laura Lindsey, assistant professor of horticulture and crop science; Steve Culman, state specialist in soil fertility and assistant professor of environment and natural resources; Anthony Dobbels, research specialist in horticulture and crop science; and Kelley Tilmon, associate professor of entomology, will speak at the event.

The field day will cover the following areas:

  • Optimizing Soybean Relative Maturity
  • Fertility Management and Tri-State Recommendations
  • Xtend and Enlist Herbicide Technologies
  • Soybean Insect Management and Update

“It is my hope that attendees can take some of what we are researching back to their operations and apply it,” said Davis.

The event is free and open to the public.
