Dry conditions continue as corn and soybean approach maturity throughout the state. Corn silage harvest, third cutting hay, and manure applications were some of the field activities noted this week by Ohio State University Extension Educators and Specialists. Keep reading for region-specific crop updates.
Northwest – Sarah Noggle of OSU Extension Paulding County reported an increase in waterhemp pressure in the region. Other weed escapes observed in soybean include common ragweed, giant ragweed, and volunteer corn. Fungicide and manure applications continued this past week, and silage harvest and processing tomato harvest has begun in some areas.
Central and West Central – Rylee Kay Puthoff of OSU Extension Shelby County shared that corn and soybean are in fair condition and soil moisture levels remain dry. Weeds noted by Extension Educators in central and west central Ohio include waterhemp, palmer amaranth, velvetleaf, volunteer corn, giant ragweed, and foxtail. Corn silage harvest and third cutting hay are also underway in the region.
Southwest – Ken Ford of OSU Extension Fayette County reported that corn and soybean are in good condition. Tar spot incidence is increasing, but the majority of corn has reached the dent stage, minimizing any potential yield losses. Low soil moisture levels continue to negatively impact soybean pod fill as we enter another dry week.
