You Won't Want to Ditch This Field Day!

Picture of a well vegetated ditch

We are just under two weeks shy of a field day focusing on two-stage ditch design, implementation, and conservation impact – a field day you won’t want to miss! Join the OSU Extension Water Quality Team on Wednesday, August 20th in West Unity, Ohio at Kevin Miller Farms to check out a newly installed two-stage ditch and hear from numerous guest speakers about the practice. The event will run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with lunch provided, free of charge, thanks to Williams County Soil & Water Conservation District.

Speakers for the program include Manny Lay, Williams County SWCD, Justin McBride, Ohio Department of Agriculture, Greg LaBarge, CCA/CPAg, Ohio State University Extension, Dr. Jim Uphaus, Rhodes State College, and Kevin Miller, Miller Farms. Space is limited for this event, so secure your spot today by visiting go.osu.edu/DTR2025 to register!

The event will begin at Miller Farms, 10117 CR 21, West Unity, Williams County, Ohio. A short walk down the street will kick off the morning’s sessions, where Manny Lay and Justin McBride will discuss the reasoning behind the installation of the Miller ditch, the process for implementation, and insights into the relatively new practice at hand. Back at Miller Farms, attendees will hear from Greg LaBarge, CCA/CPAg, about nutrients at the edge-of-field and how two-stage ditches can benefit water quality, soil health, and in-field agronomics. Dr. Jim Uphaus will share with attendees how conservation practices can provide a return on investment to farm operations and how to determine what that ROI looks like on your farm. Kevin Miller will share with the group his experience of installing the two-stage ditch and what changes he has seen to his operation since installation. We hope to see you on August 20th for this event – you don’t want to ditch this field day! Email cochran.474@osu.edu or torlina.1@osu.edu with questions.
