Winter is a great time to focus on planning for next year. Reflecting on last year’s challenges and successes can help improve management for future years, and some 2025 publications may be particularly useful as you prepare for 2026.
Firstly, there is a new article titled “Timely Forage Tips for Ohio” in the NRCS electronic Field Office Technical Guide that includes a checklist of management reminders by month. This is a modification from a resource in Kentucky, and it includes useful reminders for things like ordering seed, soil sampling, and other recurring tasks. Access the document here.
Secondly, there is a new Ohioline article titled “Giving New Life to Tired Pastures.” This is a great resource for managing perennial pastures and includes information about pasture condition scoring, soil fertility, interseeding, and weed management. Read more here.
Finally, Ed Brown from Athens County has a fantastic Forage & Pasture Planting Calendar that complements both of the resources above. It includes seeding rates and establishment timing for perennial and annual species in Ohio. Find the calendar here.
PS: looking for more info on pasture condition scoring? NRCS has a how-two guide here and a fillable worksheet here.
