Battle for the Belt: Season 4, Episode 8 – A Weather Update

In this episode, Dr. Aaron Wilson provides a weather update for this time of the season. Field Progress Updates
Good progress has been achieved by our two crops and across all three research locations. The Western location has corn ranging from the V6 (6 collared leaves) to R1 (silking) stages, with the largest growing degree day (GDD) accumulation among the three sites, anywhere between 712 and 1803 GDDs this season. Soybeans at this location are between V2 (2 trifoliates) and R3 (beginning pod), with the earliest planting dates already well past the beginning of reproductive stages (Table 1).

In the Wooster location, corn first planting reached the VT (tassel) stage, and the last planting date was still at the V7 stage. Soybeans’ first planting date in Wooster was also at the R3 stage, whereas the latter two planting dates remained in vegetative stages, V4-V7 (Table 1). In the Northwest location, corn stages ranged from V6 to R1, while soybeans ranged from V3 to R3 (Table 1). The Wooster and Northwest locations both received good precipitation in the last period (July 6 – July 19), 2.74 and 1.69 inches, respectively, with virtually no rain for Western.

Field conditions in the next few weeks, especially adequate temperatures, precipitation, and low pest pressure, will be critical to provide the conditions needed for sustained crop growth and development, good pollination, and good grain/seed development in both crops.
