Reference your malting barley contract for grain-quality parameters. Typical parameters include:
- Test weight—Should be 48 pounds per bushel or higher.
- Moisture—Should be less than 13.5%.
- Percent plump (vs. thin kernels)—Plump kernels on a 6/64 screen should be greater than 90%; thin kernels through a 5/64 screen should be less than 3%.
- Germination—Should be 95% or higher.
- Preharvest sprout—Should have no evidence.
- Deoxynivaolenol (DON)—Should be no more than 1.0 part per million (ppm)
- Protein—Should be 9.5%–12.5% on a dry basis.
