Grain Quality Parameters

Reference your malting barley contract for grain-quality parameters. Typical parameters include:

  • Test weight—Should be 48 pounds per bushel or higher.
  • Moisture—Should be less than 13.5%.
  • Percent plump (vs. thin kernels)—Plump kernels on a 6/64 screen should be greater than 90%; thin kernels through a 5/64 screen should be less than 3%.
  • Germination—Should be 95% or higher.
  • Preharvest sprout—Should have no evidence.
  • Deoxynivaolenol (DON)—Should be no more than 1.0 part per million (ppm)
  • Protein—Should be 9.5%–12.5% on a dry basis.
