    Ohio is now seeing full implementation of Ohio’s Agricultural Fertilizer Applicator Certification regulation. The regulation was result of Senate Bill 150, which can be found at http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/905.322 and http://codes.ohio.gov/orc/905.321. The 2014 regulation required farmers to complete a fertilizer certification program if they applied fertilizer to more than 50 acres of land in agricultural production primarily for sale.

  3. The FSR Nutrient Management Field Day is September 14th. We will make use of the site and facilities of the Farm Science Review’s Molly Caren Agricultural Center, near London Ohio the week before that event. Check in at 8:30 for a 9 AM start and plan to end the day by 3PM.

    A three-hour fertilizer applicator certification training program will be held by The Ohio State University Extension on Monday, August 29, from 6:30 to 9:30 PM at the Palazzo in Botkins, Ohio.  Refreshments will be served at 6:00 PM.  Topics that will be discussed include the current status of water quality, soil sampling, and phosphorus and nitrogen management.  Anyone involved in agricultural production and applying fertilizer to greater than 50 acres must obtain this certification prior to September 30, 2017.  After this date, a test could be required to obtain this certification.  This

    The number of individuals who have been trained for the Ohio Fertilizer Applicator Certification by Ohio State University Extension Agriculture and Natural Resources staff has reached 11,859 as of April 30, 2016. The ongoing training has generated a lot of positive response from farmers who attended. Requests have come in to make short review videos of key parts of the training available for review. The videos which range from 5 to 15 minutes in length have been posted to https://agcrops.osu.edu/video/fact-videos.

  7. Corn emerging

    As of Sunday May 8, 30 percent of Ohio’s corn crop was planted, which is 14 percent behind last year and 5 percent behind the five-year average (https://www.nass.usda.gov/Statistics_by_State/Ohio/Publications/Crop_Progress_&_Condition/index.php). Weather forecasts indicate more rain this week possibly continuing through Thursday.

    In 2015, the Soil Fertility Lab at Ohio State started offering a third party evaluation of proprietary soil amendments and foliar applications aimed at improving the mineral nutrition and productivity of crops.     Ohio State is looking for farmer cooperators and crop consultants to help conduct on-farm field trials this year. Updating fertilizer recommendations is a major undertaking that will require a collective effort from numerous OSU extension personnel, crop consultants and farmer cooperators. We will be looking specifically at N, P, K and S in corn, soybean and wheat. We hope to collect data from a large number of farms across the state and determine economically-optimum fertilization rates to maximize farmer profitability.

    The 2015 growing season was the 2nd year for a corn post-emergent drag hose study at the OARDC Northwest branch at Holtville. The purpose of this plot is to determine how far along in development the corn crop can be before the damage from a drag hose would rule out sidedressing emerged corn with livestock manure. A 15 foot long drag hose filled with water was used for this study.
